Personal Opinion
I agree with most of these people oddly enough. I can see where Hemingway is coming from because a lot of Chekhov's stories are simple and that is not Hemingway's style. Shown through The Sun Also Rises, Hemingway was very detailed and Chekhov is not. E Annie Proulx sounds like she likes stories where you may not have to think about the meaning, and neither do I. However, the stories of Chekhov's that I read, even though I was really, really confused at first, I actually enjoyed them. Honestly, I think Chekhov's stories were a bit of an enigma, not because there were so complex, but because they were so simple. The meaning was right there the whole time. While first reading Chekhov, I was really confused with the strange way he ended his stories, and how they were so abrupt, but looking at his good reviews, and seeing that Tolstoy appreciated his literature changed my mind as well as furthering my understanding through rereading. I can see now that Chekhov was an extremely distinguished author.
